european vacation life

Posted by on November 25, 2006

so i turned 24 this week and i think i’m going through my quarter life crisis. but really its more like my four-fifths life crisis b/c i swear i’ll be dead by the time i’m 30.

so anyway, it ocurred to me that if i turned 30 and had only ever lived in louisiana and texas that i should just jump off a bridge. seems like a wasted 6 years to me. so i thought about places i could live in. places like california (hippies and smog), washington (rain), and new england (bland food) crossed my mind. but where else? i started thinking big…

so i’ve never even visited europe much less lived there, but how amazing would that be? find a job developing software and spend my free time traveling the whole continent. (”what are you doing this weekend?” “going to ireland”)

i know some of you might be thinking: “jesus keith, why not just go there on vacation?” but how much can you really soak in a place if you’re only in a city for a day before moving on to the next city for a day ad nausium. imagine how much stuff you could see and do if you were there for an entire year? what about 2 years? all i know is that if i’m ever going to do something like this, now is the time.

i have absolutely no idea about the logistics involved. pretty sure i’d need to find a job first in order get a work visa. one idea i had is to look for work in the UK (aka english-speaking) and travel to the rest of europe. that way my job would be in english and i’d only need to speak other languages well enough to be a tourist. what i’m really looking for is a telecommuting development job. that way i’d just need a laptop and an internet connection.

living sparingly would take some getting used to since all of my extra cash would be put towards traveling, but i think it would be worth it. i’d much rather tell my grandkids about my year(s) in europe than that time when i had a nice car but did the same damn thing in the same damn place.

and who knows? maybe i’ll like it and decide to stay.

where would you live if you moved to europe?

i’ve considered that same situation for a while. i lean toward england or spain, with maybe germany a third? the language thing obviously takes some getting used to but that only takes a few months to get the hang of.

UK has a need for tech jobs the last time i was looking into it, but like you i dont know much about work visas or whatever.

sounds fun though, i’d like to do the same someday

fuck that. haven’t you ever seen Hostil? or Wolf Creek? no way im ever living in a place that denies me unalienable rights of firearm ownership. fuck dude, there are lots crazy people in europe that just want to butt rape you for your laptop. im not saying there arent people like that in america too, but at least here i know i can blow their fucking heads off and then take a peaceful nap knowing im free of criminal and cival prosecution. fucking back alley interrogation rooms and shit. don’t you watch 24?

you know some countries will cut out your eyes for putting goatse as the desktop background of a computer in CompUSA. and they should. so i guess that is a bad arguement. and i like nice cars. you might not have grandkids if some jap pays 50 euro to shove a hot poker down your peehole. and dont even get me started on zombies.

    i’d probably live in Denmark.

    I’d probably live in Germany:
    1) Nürburgring - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCrburgring
    2) Germany is right in the middle of Europe
    3) German is super easy to learn if you already know English
    4) In the UK, they drive on the wrong side of the road, and their food sucks

Same thoughts have crossed my mind, but Im a little too spoiled to go somewhere where my current way of life might be “luxurious”. Spain, Germany, England, would only have to find a decent grad school or job there.
Damn, would I love me some eastern european hotties :)
Btw, would this kill the “Keith, homeowner” dream?

  5. Keith Nov 26, 2006 23:03

yeah. and depending on timing it would probably also kill the “Keith, working car owner” dream.

Fuck it, just move somewhere in Africa : Africa 2010!

  9. Keith Nov 28, 2006 15:00

the only way i’m moving to africa is if i’m given control over a remote jungle country and the indigenous people are forced to do my bidding
